Fear Is a Funny Creature.
Fear is like a well-meaning family member; somebody you didn’t necessarily choose to have around, but somebody who knows you intimately and knows exactly what to say and what buttons to push in order to influence you to do exactly what they want you to do.
That is not to say it’s malicious or self-serving in any way.
In fact, fear is one of the most selfless creatures out there.
Its soul motivation is to protect YOU at all costs.
The problem is, it doesn’t realize what it is keeping you from in cautioning you to back away from the edge of the unknown.
The unknown is like a shadow cast on your wall from light being thrown through the crack of your closet door…
What appears to be ominous and seems as though it is about to swallow you whole and devour you completely could in actuality be something tiny, fluffy and harmless; like a stuffed animal placed just so in front of a nightlight playing tricks with the shadows on the wall.
Not only is the unknown often harmless… it usually holds great promise, joy and is almost always the place where you will discover the greatest depths of your own power.
I think what we are most afraid of are the things we most need to move toward.
I’m not talking about a hesitant step in the direction of the unknown where you shuffle your feet and crane your neck in order to try and see what is over there more clearly, but where you take off at a full sprint the way a runner’s muscles fire with a starter pistol; feet pounding the earth and lungs straining for air.
If you know in your logical mind you are not in any kind of real or immediate danger, then you would serve yourself best to lean into your fear and discomfort with full force.
Oftentimes, when we reach the other side of what we are most frightened of, we reap the most satisfying rewards.
This almost always comes in the form of a massive sense of accomplishment and the hindsight to see there was really nothing to be afraid of all along.
So, what are you afraid of? What haven’t you done yet?
And what’s stopping you?
